What is a Medical Fitness Assessment?

A Medical Fitness Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation of your health and level of fitness to assess your current health status, identify potential risks, and develop a roadmap to help you achieve your health goals and guide you towards optimal well-being and vitality.

You gain valuable insights into your current health, including your cardiovascular fitness, strength, flexibility, body composition, endurance, and more. Armed with this knowledge, we can create a plan to help you reach your fitness aspirations, whether it's improving your overall health, managing weight, increasing energy levels, or enhancing athletic performance.

Why would I go to an OT and not a GP?

As an OT, Mr Maboya will put a specific focus on functional abilities and independence, using his expertise to understand the relationship between a person's physical health and their ability to engage in meaningful activities and daily tasks. So you get the medical side, plus a better idea of how to incorporate that understanding into your daily life.

What can I expect during a Medical Fitness Assessment?

During this session, we'll discuss your health history, goals, interests, and any concerns you may have. We'll then guide you through a series of tests and measurements tailored to your needs. We'll assess your cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, flexibility, body composition, and provide guidance on nutrition and lifestyle modifications.

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Evaluation: We perform measurements and assessments to determine your current physical abilities and limitations. This evaluation helps identify areas that may require improvement or intervention.
  2. Individualised Recommendations: Based on the assessment findings, we'll give you recommendations to enhance your overall fitness and functional abilities. These recommendations may include exercises, stretches, assistive devices, modifications to the environment, or lifestyle adjustments.
  3. Goal Setting: Then we'll set specific, achievable goals based on your unique needs and aspirations. They may focus on improving strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, or overall functional performance. If you just want to be able to climb a flight of stairs without arriving at the top breathless, or if you're preparing to race against Usain Bolt, we're here for it all.
  4. Intervention Planning: If necessary, we'll develop therapeutic exercises, activity modifications, adaptive strategies, and assistive technology.
  5. Education and Empowerment: Throughout the assessment process, we'll educate and guide you on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, preventing injuries, managing chronic conditions, and promoting overall well-being. This empowers you to take an active role in your own health and fitness.
